PBSI Calls Out BWF for Fatal Error in 2024 Olympic Qualification Points

JAKARTA – The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) has asked the international badminton parent BWF to be held responsible for the fatal error in entering the 2024 Olympic qualification points.

PBSI Secretary General Fadil Imran said the mistake committed violated the rules and high spirits of the Olympics.

“The miscalculations made by BWF directly harm not only the Indonesian pair, especially Bagas Maulana/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, but also all the pairs who fought on the road to Paris 2024,” he said.

The impact of the BWF’s negligence has resulted in French men’s doubles pair Ronan Azad/Lucas Corvee securing a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In the Road to Paris ranking, the doubles are actually not qualified. However, they can secure a ticket to Paris thanks to the victory in the case before the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).

When the European Tour ended, Ronan/Lucas were in the finish area at the Olympics. However, the BWF later revised the rankings because they were aware they had made a mistake.

The results of the review meant that the French pair Christo Popov / Tom Junior Popov actually got a ticket to this year’s Olympics. Unhappy with this, Ronan / Lucas then appealed and were accepted.

Ronan/Lucas’ entry into the Olympics automatically increases the number of men’s doubles that later became 17 pairs. This will automatically affect the group draw later.

The four groups, each consisting of four teams, one of which will now host more or less five pairs who fight in a tap system.

“If there is later Fajar Alfian / Muhammad Rian Ardianto in the group, they will play four times in the group stage. It is very unfortunate because there is an elimination of one match,” said Fadil.

In addition, the miscalculation of this point also hurt other Indonesian pairs, namely Bagas Maulana / Muhammad Shohibul Fikri.

This loss occurred, for example, at the 2024 Badminton Asian Championships. At that time, Bagas/Fikri became eighth seed in a new number after initially becoming ninth seed.

The position of Bagas / Fikri which is pursued instead of continuing the pressures. As a result, the pair of All England champions 2022 immediately lost in the first half.

The end of this error means that the men’s doubles draw has not yet been made. In fact, the draw for other numbers was completed on Friday.
