Lima, Jul 15 (EFE).- The Peruvian Olympic Committee (COP) said goodbye on Monday to the 26 athletes who will represent the Andean country at the Paris Olympic Games with a ‘flag raising’ ceremony in Lima.

“You, athletes, represent the history of a people and a country. You who are Olympians and who represent those moments when you had to rise up, a medal is indistinct to the effort you leave for the country. You, athletes, mark a new generation for the homeland,” said the president of the Peruvian Olympic Committee, Renzo Manyari, quoted in a COP statement.

At the celebration, held in the Lima district of Miraflores, those in charge of carrying the Peruvian flag across the Seine River at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games were honored: fencer María Luisa Doig and judoka Juan Miguel Postigos.

The event was attended by surfers Alonso Correa and Sol Aguirre, badminton player Inés Castillo and sports authorities such as the president of the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD), Federico Tong Hurtado, the head of the Paris 2024 mission, Leyla Chihuán, and the Olympic medalist Los Angeles 84 Francisco Boza, among others.

The Peruvian delegation will wear the ‘chacana’ or Andean cross on their uniforms, a pre-Incan symbol that represents the connection between man and nature, the union of the spiritual and earthly worlds, and the interrelation between the different aspects of life, the COP explained.

Among the 26 Peruvian athletes who will travel to Paris, the most notable are the race walker and world champion Kimberly García, and Gladys Tejeda, Thalia Valdivia, Luz Mery Rojas, Cristhian Pacheco, Mary Luz Andía, Evelyn Inga, César Rodríguez and Luis Henry Campos will also compete in athletics.

In badminton will compete Inés Castillo, in fencing, Maria Luisa Doig, in swimming, Maria Alejandra Bramont-Arias, Mckenna de Bever and Joaquin Vargas and in rowing Alessia Palacios, Valeria Palacios and Adriana Sanguineti.

Alonso Correa, Lucca Mesinas and Sol Aguirre will be the representatives in surfing, Nicolas Pacheco and Daniella Borda in shooting, Stefano Peschiera, Florencia Chiarella and María Belén Bazo in sailing and Juan Miguel Postigos in judo. EFE
