BARCELONA, 16 (EUROPA PRESS)

Belgian cyclist Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) won the sixteenth stage of the Tour de France on Tuesday, contested between Gruissan and Nimes over 188.6 kilometres, with clear authority in the sprint in which the points leader Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) was unable to participate, having fallen on the approach to the finish line.

With this victory in Nimes, Philipsen equals Girmay’s three stage wins in this Tour de France, who will continue to lead the points classification but arrived at the finish line visibly hurt after the massive crash, 1.6 kilometres from the finish, in which he was involved.

There was no fight; there was no sprint. Jasper Philipsen took advantage of a great launch from his teammate Mathieu van der Poel to overtake second and third place finishers Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Victorious) and Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X Mobility) without any opposition, by more than a bike length.

Biniam Girmay might have put up a stronger fight, but he lost his green jersey in the 111th edition of the Tour de France in a crash with several riders from EF Education-EasyPost, among others, and was unable to try to win a fourth stage in this French race. On the other hand, he was told over the radio that Philipsen had equalled him on three stage wins.

Apart from that crash, on a large roundabout where Girmay hit the protective barriers and the ground – damaging his right arm with visible abrasions – there were no more incidents and Jasper Philipsen set off, with the enormous help of the reigning world champion, for his ninth stage victory in the Tour de France. In a stage with no changes in the general classification and with a timid breakaway, solo by Thomas Gachignard (TotalEnergies), who did not intimidate the group.

The peloton will begin to arrive in the French Alps on Wednesday. They will start from Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateaux and arrive at Superdévoluy after 177.8 kilometres, in a scenario suitable for breakaways but with several climbs in the last 40 kilometres of the stage.

This potential fight between the breakaway and the peloton will have a tough battle on the Col Bayard and on the climb to the Col du Noyer (7.5 kilometres with an average gradient of 8.4 percent) and the final battle before the Superdévoluy station, a third category climb.
