Piacenza Set to Face Tough Challenge against Second-Placed Sala Baganza

PIACENZA HOSTS THE SALA BAGANZA, SECOND IN THE CLASS – An eagerly awaited appointment on Sunday for Piacenza Baseball, which at the De Benedetti hosts the second-placed Sala Baganza (game 1 at 11 am – game 2 at 3 pm). A high-risk derby that catches the red and whites at a less than brilliant moment. After a first half of the season in great form, which kept them constantly in third place, the team coached by Andrea D’Auria undertook the return leg with some hesitation that in the last period led them first to draw in Milan with Ares and then to lose twice last Sunday in Parma with Junior. The most immediate consequence was to climb to fifth place in the standings, a little further away from Sala Baganza who arrives at the De Benedetti in the midst of a play-off brawl.

The Salesi are the most credible candidates, together with the leaders Avigliana, for a place in the play-offs that would put them back in the running for a quick return to Serie A after last year’s relegation. In the first leg there were two victories for the ducals, who this year can count on a technical staff with entirely Piacenza characteristics. The coach is in fact Giampiero Carini, an unforgettable red and white player with 333 appearances and a few years ago coach in Piacenza. He is joined, as collaborators, by two old Piacenza acquaintances such as Gianluca Marenghi, until last year the red and white manager with the historic 2013 championship in his trophy cabinet, and Emilio Albertazzi, back in the game a few seasons ago after the amazing interlude in the late 90s that saw him protagonist, as coach, of Piacenza’s first historic promotion to Serie A2 and several play-offs for Serie A1. A nice slice of Piacenza baseball at the service of a Sala who is clearly aiming for a quick return to the top division. Aside from a few stumbles here and there, the Parma team is honoring its objectives and it won’t be easy for Piacenza to snatch the points needed to get back on track and not slip further in the standings.

A real derby with a high stake at stake. A few weeks ago it would have allowed Piacenza to cultivate the dream of a possible approach to the play-off threshold, while today it can no longer lend itself to ambitious interpretations given that for our players the priority has become the wiser one of looking behind and, while there is time, gathering as quickly as possible the points necessary to achieve safety in serenity.

THE OTHER GAMES: Avigliana Rebels-Junior Parma, Ares Milan-Brescia and Altopiano Seveso-Porta Mortara Novara.

CLASSIFICATION: Avigliana Rebels 833 (18-15-3), Sala Baganza 737 (19-14-5), Altopiano Seveso 556 (18-10-8), Junior Parma 500 (18-9-9), Piacenza 471 (17-8-9), Brescia 444 (18-8-10), Ares Milano 300 (20-6-14), Porta Mortara Novara 200 (20-4-16).

YOUTH: after yet another postponement on Wednesday due to bad weather for the U18s who now see the number of make-up matches they will have to play rise to four, on Sunday morning there will be an away trip to Parma, against Crocetta, for Piacenza U14s (kick-off at 10.30am).
