Portugal beat Slovenia on penalties to face France in quarter-finals

Portugal-France, this will therefore be the quarter-final match, Friday evening, in Hamburg (9 p.m.). CR7’s teammates knocked out Slovenia on penalties, Monday, in the 8th finals of the Euro (1-0, 3-0 pen).

Favorites in this round of 16, Portugal started the match at the right end with a dangerous cross from Bernardo Silva (13th) that neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Bruno Fernandes could take. Dominant in the game but lacking inspiration up front, Roberto Martinez’s men were then dragged into a false rhythm by the Slovenians. CR7 woke his team up with a powerful shot from a free kick over (34th) and Palhinha hit the post with a shot on the ground, from the edge of the area, after a lot of work from Rafa Leao (45th + 3). No goals in the first half or the second for that matter.

Omnipresent, Ronaldo came up against Jan Oblak twice (55th and 89th). In the meantime, Benjamin Sesko had not found the target on one of the rare Slovenian situations (61st). So all these little people went into extra time.

Ronaldo’s tears after his missed penalty

With the strong image of this match. It was the 103rd minute and Diogo Jota was unbalanced in the Slovenian area by Drkusic. Mr. Orsato, the match referee, then pointed to the penalty spot. A golden opportunity for CR7 to give his country the lead but the Portuguese star saw his penalty pushed back by Oblak, who made a magnificent save with the help of the post (105th). Half-time of extra time was then whistled and CR7 burst into tears, comforted by Diogo Dalot, in the middle of the match. Present in the stands, his mother also shed a few tears. The second half of extra time was calmer even if Slovenia had a match ball. After a mistake by Pepe, Sesko escaped towards Diogo Costa’s goal but the Leipzig striker lost his duel with the FC Porto goalkeeper, who was decisive on this shot (115th).

The decision was therefore made on penalties. And the Slovenians started very badly since Ilicic, Balkovec and Verbic came up against Diogo Costa, who was on fire during this session. Opposite, CR7 did not tremble this time, just like Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva. Portugal will therefore be at the quarter-finals and will meet France, Friday, in Hamburg (9 p.m.).
