President Déby targeted by an investigation in France

Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno is the subject of a preliminary investigation in France for embezzlement of public funds and receiving stolen goods.

This investigation, opened in January 2024 by the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office (PNF), follows an article published by Mediapart on December 15, 2023. This article revealed that President Déby had spent 915,000 euros to buy suits, shirts and safari jackets from a famous Parisian tailor.

The investigations, led by the Central Office for the Repression of Serious Financial Crime (OCRGDF), could also extend to the real estate assets of the Déby clan in France, as part of the investigations into “ill-gotten gains”. This case is in addition to the many similar cases that have already targeted African leaders in France, provoking sensitive diplomatic reactions.
