Primoz Roglic’s Contrasting History with the Tour de France

Primoz Roglic will not be at the start of the 13th stage of the 2024 Tour this Friday. Having fallen on Thursday in the final of the 12th stage, he crossed the line 2 minutes and 27 seconds behind the winner Biniam Girmay. For his return to the Tour with his new Red Bull – Bora-Hansgrohe colours, history repeated itself for the Slovenian, who has already been the victim of bad luck several times on the Grande Boucle.

2017 and 2018: promising beginnings

From his first Tour in 2017, Primoz Roglic shone and won solo on the 17th stage, after accelerating on the slopes of Galibier. In 2018, he won another stage in Laruns, and finished 4th in the general classification. Although he arrived in cycling late, the Slovenian is already showing all his qualities and is a potential favorite for the coming years.

2020: the unfortunate time trial of the Planche des Belles Filles

Winner of the Vuelta in 2019, Primoz Roglic steps forward as leader of his Jumbo-Visma team for the 2020 Tour. He wins at the top of the Orcières-Merlette climb during the 4th stage, and takes the yellow jersey a few days later. With a 57-second lead over Tadej Pogacar on the morning of the 20th stage time trial, the Tour seems promised to him, he who is a very good time trial specialist.

But nothing goes as planned. While his young compatriot makes an extraordinary climb, Roglic is out of the running. With his ill-fitting helmet, his stare into space, he digs into the climb of the Planche des Belles Filles and never manages to find the right rhythm. The Jumbo-Visma rider loses almost two minutes and has to give up his jersey. A real blow and a second place in Paris that will leave a bitter taste.

2021: a fall at the start

Primoz Roglic arrives in 2021 with the ambition of taking his revenge on Tadej Pogacar. Unfortunately, he falls heavily on the 3rd stage. If he tries to continue, he loses a lot of time on the following stages, until conceding 35 minutes on the 8th stage between Oyonnax and Le Grand-Bornand. He will not be a starter the next day, too weakened by his injuries.

2022: a new fall then luxury teammate

On the 2022 Tour, Primoz Roglic is announced as co-leader of the Jumbo-Visma with Jonas Vingegaard. On the 5th stage, so dreaded with its cobblestone passages, he falls again and loses time, and at the same time his status as co-leader.

3

This is the number of stages won by Primoz Roglic in the Tour. This is also the number of times he did not finish the race (2021, 2022 and 2024).

He then became a luxury lieutenant for Vingegaard, particularly on the stage of the Col du Granon, where his multiple attacks on the Yellow Jersey Tadej Pogacar allowed his teammate to dethrone the UAE Team Emirates rider. But he was again a non-starter on the morning of the 15th stage, wanting to treat his injuries as best he could.
