Questions Surround Emergency Response in Tragic Death of Teenage Badminton Player in Indonesia

There are suspicions that emergency measures at the scene were inadequate in the accident in which a promising teenage Chinese badminton player collapsed and died on the court during an international competition in Indonesia.

Zhang Zhijie, 17, a member of the Chinese youth men’s singles team, suddenly collapsed on the court during a group match of the mixed team event at the 2024 Asian Junior Badminton Championships held in Indonesia on the 30th of last month.

If you look at the video at the time, you can see that Zhang Zhijie fell forward during the preparatory movement and showed symptoms of convulsions. When the medical staff arrived to check on Zhang Zhijie’s condition, it had been about 40 seconds since he had fallen.

Zhang Zhijie was later transferred to the hospital, but was pronounced dead that night. Foreign media outlets including AP reported that he was believed to have suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.

“The world of badminton has lost a talented player,” the Badminton Federation of Asia, the Indonesian Badminton Association and the Organizing Committee of the Asian Junior Badminton Championships said in a joint statement, expressing their deepest condolences to Zhang’s parents and family, as well as the China Badminton Association.

However, local Chinese media and social media are flooded with criticism, saying that emergency measures were taken too late and that there was not even an automated external defibrillator (AED) at the scene for initial response to cardiac arrest.

Some posts have highlighted the early response as being too late, compared to when Denmark national football team player Christian Eriksen collapsed in cardiac arrest during the group stage of Euro 2020 in 2021 and received emergency treatment within about five seconds.

Moreover, the video at the time showed the referee seemingly stopping people who were trying to approach Zhang Zhijie as he collapsed. The Indonesian Badminton Association explained that they were following the rule that “medical staff must obtain permission from the referee before entering the court, and this is a rule that applies to all international competitions,” which only made the controversy bigger.
