RB Leipzig Announces Marcel Schäfer as New Sports Director

Bundesliga football club RB Leipzig has found a successor for Max Eberl, who has moved to Bayern Munich. As the club announced on Sunday, Marcel Schäfer will be the new sports director at the Saxons. The 40-year-old, who most recently worked for league rival VfL Wolfsburg, signed a contract until 2028 and will officially start work on August 1st.

In Leipzig, Schäfer has overall responsibility for the professional team including staff, scouting, the youth division including the academy and the RBL women’s department. He completes the management team around Johann Plenge and Florian Hopp.

“We are delighted to be able to present Marcel Schäfer as our new sports director. We are convinced that his spirit, experience and skills make him a great fit for RB Leipzig,” said Supervisory Board Chairman Oliver Mintzlaff. Leipzig has “taken an impressive path,” said Schäfer: “Our common goal is for this top club to continue to grow, be as successful as possible and at the same time remain one of the first port of call for young top talents in Europe.”

Last September, Leipzig parted ways with Eberl after just ten months, who moved to FC Bayern. Schäfer is now taking up the post of managing director, with sporting director Rouven Schröder having taken over the sporting management in the meantime. Long-time Wolfsburg professional Schäfer informed the club of his desire to move in April and was subsequently relieved of his duties.
