Recap of Wimbledon Day 4: Sinner Triumphs, Alcaraz Shines, Ruud Unlucky, Medvedev Bounces Back

  • World number 1 Jannik Sinner (ITA) wins in 4 sets against compatriot Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon.
  • Carlos Alcaraz is still undefeated after the second round.
  • Casper Ruud remains unlucky on grass. The world number 8 is defeated by veteran Fabio Fognini.
  • Daniil Medvedev gets back on track against Alexandre Muller just in time.

The Italian Jannik Sinner (ATP 1) fought his way into the next round against fellow countryman Matteo Berrettini. The 22-year-old had a close match with his opponent, who was six years older. The first two sets were decided in tiebreaks – both times with the better outcome for Sinner.

But Berrettini knew that the match was by no means lost. He broke Sinner twice in the 3rd set and reduced the score to 1:2 in sets. And the 28-year-old also managed an early break in the 4th set. However, Sinner countered with a direct rebreak. So this set also went to a quick decision. The story from the first two sets repeated itself: Berrettini lost his nerve at the decisive moment, Sinner also won the 3rd tiebreak of the match and finally won 7:6 (7:3), 7:6 (7:4), 2:6, 7:6 (7:4) in 3 hours and 42 minutes.

In the 3rd round, Sinner will face Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic (ATP 52), who defeated Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (ATP 27) in 5 sets in his second round match.

Alcaraz continues without losing a set

After a temporary 5-2 lead, Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 3) was suddenly faced with a 5:6 deficit in the first set against Aleksandar Vukic (AUS/ATP 69). The Spaniard, however, remained calm, saved himself with a break in the tiebreak and kept the upper hand there with 7:5. The hard-fought first set was also the key to the ultimately safe 7:6, 6:2, 6:2 victory.

In the third round, Alcaraz will face Frances Tiafoe (ATP 29), his first real challenge. The American was already heating up the duel with the French Open champion after his success over Borna Coric: “Now it’s your turn!” said Tiafoe with a grin.

Ruud and Rasen: Still no love story

Not all top players find their way on grass as quickly and well as Alcaraz. This is proven by the example of Casper Ruud (ATP 8). The Norwegian, a three-time Grand Slam finalist, has never made it past the second round at Wimbledon in four attempts before this year. And it will remain that way in 2024.

Ruud proved his fighting qualities against Fabio Fognini (ITA/ATP 94), winning the third set despite being 2:5 down and having match point against him. But the world number 8 was not able to turn things around. On the fourth match point and after 3:18 hours, the now 37-year-old Fognini sealed the 6:4, 7:5, 6:7 (1:7), 6:3 victory.

Medvedev makes a turnaround

After Andrei Rublev (ATP 6), Ruud is the second top 10 player to be eliminated from Wimbledon. Daniil Medvedev (ATP 5) also had to briefly worry about remaining in the tournament. After losing the tiebreak in the first set against the Frenchman Alexandre Muller (ATP 102), the Russian also fell behind 0:3 in the second set.

At 4:5, the underdog missed a chance to take a 2:0 lead. Medvedev managed to equalize the set with great difficulty and was the better player from then on. After 3:30 hours, the favorite’s 6:7 (3:7), 7:6 (7:4), 6:4, 7:5 victory was in the bag.
