Relief for England as Bellingham avoids suspension for obscene gesture

A big sigh of relief resounds from England. Across the pond, every football fan has been living in fear for the past few days about the potential suspension of their star player Jude Bellingham, who celebrated his buzzer beater against Slovakia with an obscene gesture. “It will remain a fine of 20,000 euros,” the German Bild announced this morning.

England looked set to be knocked out of the European Championship round of 16 in Germany by a surprise strike from Slovakia until star player Jude Bellingham changed all that with a superb bicycle kick in the 95th minute.

The joy was – not incomprehensibly – great among the Three Lions and the English star himself. After a collective celebration he stepped back to his position, but not without being caught making an obscene gesture. Images show Bellingham grabbing his private parts.

It was said on the internet that it was aimed at the Slovakian bench, but Bellingham denied that after the game on X: “It was a joke for some good friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how the Slovakian team played tonight.”

UEFA investigated the incident and there were fears for a suspension in the quarter-final against Switzerland. But thanks in part to his statement on X, Bellingham now gets away with a fine of 20,000 euros.

UEFA ruled that the gesture was not clearly aimed at the opponent. Slovakia also did not file a complaint, which also helped his eventual suspension.

For his unsportsmanlike behavior, Bellingham will receive a fine of 20,000 euros. England can therefore compete with Bellingham against Switzerland tomorrow for a place in the semi-finals.
