Video length: 2 min Stage 5: Mark Cavendish takes Eddy Merckx’s record! Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) takes his 35th stage victory on the Tour and becomes the rider to have raised his arms the most times on the big Loop. The Briton beat Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin – Deceuninck) and Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X Mobility) in the sprint at Saint Vulbas

The Briton showed he is still as effective in the sprint on Wednesday, taking his 35th Tour de France victory, a record.

The record for Mark Cavendish! For the second sprint of this Tour de France 2024, the Briton won his 35th stage victory on the Tour, breaking Eddy Merckx’s record, on this fifth stage between Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and Saint Vulbas, Wednesday July 3. The 39-year-old rider beat Jasper Philipsen and Alexander Kristoff at the end of a sprint marked in the last meters by a fall.

His knowledge of positioning and his power once again made the difference over his rivals. The Briton, who won the Tour de France for the first time sixteen years ago, had not raised his arms since his victory in Carcassonne in 2021. Last year, “le Cav” had to abandon due to a broken collarbone after a fall during the 11th stage of what was to be his last Tour de France.
