The German Tennis Association (DTB) is mourning the loss of its long-time president Claus Stauder. The lawyer and brewery boss from Essen died at the weekend at the age of 86. Stauder’s family announced this. Stauder was president of the DTB from 1985 to 1999 and honorary president from 1998.
“We bow to a great personality in tennis. Dr. Claus Stauder has created a monument for himself with his decades of work at the DTB. With calm and prudence, he led the DTB through its most successful era. We will always be grateful to him for that. Our thoughts are with his family and relatives,” said DTB President Dietloff von Arnim.
28 German Grand Slam victories under Stauder
During Stauder’s 14-year tenure, German players won a total of 28 Grand Slam titles, including tennis icon Boris Becker’s three Wimbledon victories and legend Steffi Graf’s Golden Slam (winning all four Grand Slams and the Olympic Games in one year, editor’s note) in 1988.

His awards include the Golden DTB Badge of Honour, the Grand Federal Cross of Merit and the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. (sid/bv)
