Renato Tapia: A Free Agent with Options

Since last Monday, and officially, Renato Tapia became a free agent after four seasons at Celta de Vigo. It was only a matter of time before the calendar turned from June to July, which meant the end of his contract with the Galician club. A reality that was already known a little over a month ago. ‘El Cabezón’ knew that his future was going to be far from Vigo and waited for the end of his contract (June 30) to decide his future. With his letter of approval in hand, the defensive midfielder is free to listen to offers and decide which direction to take.

The Spanish and European markets are aware of Renato Tapia and his name has already been linked with Girona, the team that would have the first option to sign him, but they are not the only ones who have sounded him out. In Spain, he is also associated with Real Betis, Villarreal, Ipswich Town (recently promoted to the Premier League) and even the historic Porto. For this reason, Depor spoke with Santi Peón, a journalist from Cadena COPE, to give us more insight into the situation of ‘El Cabezón’.

After the last of his contract expired, Celta de Vigo said goodbye to Renato Tapia with a message and the player’s response was not long in coming. In that sense, the relationship between both parties ended on good terms; on his part, regarding the Peruvian’s time in football, Santi Peón pointed out that the first season of the ‘Cabezón’ and the other three remaining seasons, in general terms, stood out for his game, but he did not fully exploit his potential.

“His time here can be divided into two parts. His first season was spectacular, showing the type of footballer he is and how much he could contribute not only to Celta, but to the League in general. In fact, he sparked the interest of some of the big clubs, such as Atlético de Madrid. Everything that came after the first season, the Copa América, the little rest he had, and therefore the accumulation of injuries, all of that led to the second season being worse than the first. From then on it was much harder for him to get into the swing of things despite the fact that many coaches had been on the bench. There is no doubt that he is a great footballer, but apart from his first season he was unable to show his full potential at Celta due to various factors,” commented Peón.

Beyond the fact that he left Galicia with that perception, Tapia’s name has generated a lot of interest in other clubs, now more than ever as a free agent. Girona seems to be one step ahead of everyone else, and there is even talk of a pre-contract with the club that will play in the Champions League next season. For Peón, if ‘Cabezón’ is at 100%, he could fit perfectly into Míchel’s scheme.

“What is clear is that Girona is a different team to Celta, due to its playing philosophy, its formation, and many other things. [Girona] “He has shown that he has a good coach, who trusts his players and that is important. If he could fit in at Girona, which has now transferred Aleix García… although he is not the same style or prototype of player, Tapia is at 100% of his potential. He is a player who can adapt to any team in the world, he has a lot of talent and above all, he works hard,” added the Spanish journalist who closely covers the day to day of the Galician club.

And although the main option would be in Spanish football, Renato Tapia’s name also appeared on the radar of clubs such as Porto of Portugal and Ipswich Town, a team recently promoted to the Premier League for the next season. Precisely, English football is an attractive market for the 29-year-old national midfielder, not only for the experience, exposure and competitiveness, but also in economic terms. The European window has just begun and ‘El Cabezón’ has until August 31, the last day of transfers, to make the best decision for his career.

“He has a market in Spanish football, perhaps not the same as after his first season, but it is clear that he has a market. It will depend on what his financial expectations are in order to reach an agreement in a football like the Spanish one, which is not particularly at its best financially. I do know that the Premier League has always attracted Renato’s attention, to make the big jump, he would like to have the chance to show his worth, at least in a team in the English league. There is more money there, more capital and there could obviously be more options. In the League he has shown that if he is well he can fit into any team, and due to his work and style of play if one day he makes the jump to the Premier League, he is a player who would surely stand out,” concluded Santi Peón.
