Revamping Anfield: The Turf Transformation for the Upcoming Season

The current state of the Anfield turf

Liverpool’s Anfield is in a noticeable state of disrepair after hosting several concerts in recent days. The natural grass has been replaced due to damage caused by mass events, and recent aerial images released by the British newspaper The Sun have caused concern among the Reds fans because they reveal a muddy ground that contrasts with the usual green grass of the ground. With a capacity of 61,276 spectators, every corner of the stadium shows the consequences of intensive use.

The stadium hosted Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour for three nights in June and two Pink shows later that month. “It’s been left unrecognisable,” wrote journalist Tony Robertson in the paper, reporting on the revealing photographs. Replacement work has already begun, with maintenance staff accustomed to such tasks. Last year, the installation of a new turf also took three days and was replaced with a hybrid made up of 95% natural grass and 5% artificial fibres, the paper said.

This work was developed by the Turkish company Hatko Hybridgrass. The technology “combines all the benefits of a natural grass playing surface with the strength and durability of synthetic turf.” The new pitch will maintain the dimensions of 101 by 68 metres, suitable for Premier League matches.

On August 11th he has to be ready for a friendly between Liverpool and Sevilla

The state of arrangements will be put to the test on 11 August as they host a friendly against Sevilla. Liverpool then begin the new season away to newly promoted Ipswich and host Brentford in their first game at Anfield on 24 August. Last season, the team played 29 home games in all competitions under Jürgen Klopp, who is no longer at the club this term, having been replaced by former Feyenoord manager Arne Slot.

Anfield has been the scene of many historic moments. It was the venue for many Euro 1996 matches, when Germany won the trophy against the Czech Republic. It has also been the scene of great comebacks, such as Liverpool’s victory over Barcelona in the 2018/19 Champions League semi-finals. In recent years, the English team has reached three Champions League finals, winning the title in 2019 against Tottenham and losing twice to Real Madrid.

The adaptation of the pitch is crucial to the plans of the new coach, who has just won the local league with Feyenoord in 2023, the 2024 Dutch Cup and was a finalist in the 2021/22 Conference League (lost to Jose Mourinho’s Roma). The renovation of the turf will allow the high quality of play to be maintained and ensures that Anfield remains one of the most impressive stadiums in Europe.
