Reviving Community Spirit: Highlights from the Thrilling Second Annual North Tokyo Derby

On Sunday, July 21, 2024, the HELSPO HUB-3 Arena on the Akabanedai Campus hosted “THE NORTH TOKYO DERBY,” a match between the men’s basketball team of our university, based in Kita Ward, Tokyo, and the Tokyo Seitoku University men’s basketball team, planned and organized by students to generate excitement throughout the town. This was the second year in a row that “THE NORTH TOKYO DERBY” was held.

The event was co-hosted by Johoku Shinkin Bank, Igarashi Shokai Co., Ltd., Natori Co., Ltd., and Taguchi Ayako Tax Accountant Office, with support from Koshino Construction Co., Ltd., Olympia Kogyo Co., Ltd., and Shopping Center Bibio, as well as support from Kita Ward, Tokyo.

This event was sponsored by the Toyo Sports Center and run by seminar students from Lecturer Tanizuka Satoshi’s Faculty of Health and Sports Science, Professor Nakahasa’s Faculty of International Tourism Studies, and volunteer students from Tokyo Seitoku University, as well as with the cooperation of the university’s women’s basketball club. The event was planned and run with the hope of creating a culture of local residents supporting the university through basketball games, and that university students would develop a sense of attachment to the local community by getting involved with it.

Before the match, a performance was given by the Kita Ward-based kids cheer dance team “Y.C.D.”, and the Kita Ward Tourism Association mascot “Shibusawa-kun” made an appearance to liven up the atmosphere.

During the match, the crowd cheered loudly as each player made a quick and elegant pass and three-point shot, with live commentary of the game. Our university won 86 to 57. In addition, the MVP players, as determined by a vote of the spectators, were selected as Sato Seika from our university and Diarra Omar from Tokyo Seitoku University.

Spectators commented, “It was great fun to watch the powerful play of the university students. I’d definitely like to come and watch again next year.”

After the game, our university’s basketball club (men’s), Tokyo Seitoku University’s men’s basketball club, and our university’s basketball club (women’s) held a “basketball experience workshop.” This event was held with the aim of allowing participants to experience the fun of basketball, especially for children.

In the hands-on workshop, university students taught the students one-on-one basic techniques of dribbling, passing, and shooting for 15 minutes each. At the end of the workshop, the captains of each basketball club demonstrated dunk shots, which are rarely seen among elementary school students and younger, and the audience was particularly excited.

The children who participated commented, “I was surprised at how big the players were,” “The university students taught us kindly,” and “I love basketball even more now.” The students who coached also spoke of how it was a valuable experience, saying, “I was able to rediscover the joy of basketball,” and “It was comforting to see the children having fun.”

We received many warm comments from the parents and are pleased that everyone enjoyed the event. We hope to continue spreading the appeal of sports through events like this in the future.
