Rising Star: Meret Willeke Elevating Fastpitch Softball in the Paderborn District

Now the sport of fastpitch softball for women, which is currently played in the association league, is to be taken to a higher level.

More sports from the Paderborn district

The hosting of the U19 national cup in the U’s ballpark in May demonstrated the great conditions that the Ahorn ballpark offers. With four players from the Untouchables’ ranks winning the tournament as part of the NRW team, the potential of the Paderborn team is also clear. One player on the young team, which is currently undergoing restructuring, is Meret Willeke.

In U15, U18 and U22 national teams

The 15-year-old, who has been with the team since 2016, has already achieved a lot despite her young age thanks to the excellent support she has received in the club and at national and international level. She took part in the European Championships in 2022 as part of the U15 national squad. The U18 national team went to the European Championships in Prague again in 2023, and at the German U16 Championships she was able to reinforce the Neunkirchen Nightmares as a guest player.

Participation in U22 European Championship conceivable

She has just taken part in the Prague Softball Week with the U22 team. However, they only won one of five matches in the Czech capital. An 8:3 win on the opening day against Ukraine was followed by a 1:11 defeat against the Czech U18 team, a 0:7 defeat against the Czech U22 team, a 1:3 defeat against Austria’s U22 team and a 3:6 defeat against the Czechstars U22 team. As Meret Willeke is in the extended squad of the U22 national team, she could take part in the European Championships again this year. In April, the players of the national squad were prepared for this event during an international tournament in Haarlem (Netherlands). At the beginning of May, she and the U18 squad went to the international Palomino tournament in Stuttgart. There, the German team won the silver medal.

For her club, the powerful player plays third and second base in the association league, but also as a shortstop. In the 1st Bundesliga, she is in the lineup as a shortstop for the Neunkirchen Nightmares. Meret Willeke’s big wish: to establish herself in the 1st Bundesliga with the Untouchables, so that she can then fight for the German championship in the premier league. But the player is thinking even bigger. After her high school exams, which she will take next spring, her goal is to play softball at an American college in order to finally realize her dream of playing professional softball.
