Roberto ‘Sam’ Bianchi Returns to Pallacanestro Cantù: A Homecoming of Experience and Passion

Sometimes they come back. Yes. And they do, as in this case, after having left a significant and clear trace of themselves in the previous experience. Both from a professional and a human perspective. Roberto “Sam” Bianchi arrived at the first team of Pallacanestro Cantù in 2002 and then put down deep roots until 2016. And now, eight years later – when the Primavera on his shoulders have become 64 (he was born in 1960) -, he returns to reclaim his role, that of strength & conditioning coach of the white and blue club.

Year 2002: she actually debuts as assistant coach of Sacripanti.

That’s how it is and only two years later I change “job”. Pino sees me working with young people, and we are talking about the grammar of weightlifting, and asks me to dedicate myself entirely to the physical-athletic aspect of the Serie A team. I accept and even now I thank the Corrado family and Bruno Arrigoni who had faith in a perfect stranger. After that, the years under the guidance of Cremascoli allowed me to broaden my bases also thanks to the many trips to the United States to learn and deepen my knowledge of new technologies. The seasons in the Euroleague were extraordinary, professionally, for what was now recognized as the “Cantù lab”, appreciated and looked upon with admiration not only in Italy but also abroad.

The so-called “locker room B” was on everyone’s lips.

We were musketeers, us. Woe betide those who divided us, always together ready to fight even though supported by the lightheartedness that many envied us.

His farewell to Cantù dates back to 2016, with the arrival of Dmitry Gerasimenko at the head of the company.

I couldn’t live in an environment like that anymore where coaches and players kept changing and I couldn’t build human relationships anymore. And I said stop.

What did he do next?

I collaborated with the Pgc and it was an honor and a pleasure. I will never stop thanking Antonio Munafò who took me into his family and now I would like to represent a link between the youth sector and the first team.

What convinced you to return to Pallacanestro Cantù?

The premise is that I have never been able to enter a sports hall to watch a Cantù match because I felt sad. My first time in Desio was just recently on the occasion of Mazzarino’s return. There I also saw Brienza again who would sign shortly after. My agent called me and offered me the possibility of working for Cantù. I spoke about it with my wife who is my true compass and in 12 seconds she convinced me. So I accepted.

Did he also say yes as a sort of bet?

I would prefer to use the term mission. Not religious, mind you, but military.

What kind of work are you thinking of setting up?

First of all, it is essential to see the players first. The first thing will be the evaluation of functionality. What can they do, I mean. Because one thinks of a professional player as a person bursting with health, while sometimes you have to deal with wear and tear. As if they were sedentary specialists, very good at three things, but not at all stimulated to do others. Then move on to the application of the so-called “Riva method” that has given us so much in the past and that will still be one of our cornerstones. And then the development and control of strength without disturbing technical training. Finally, the continuous monitoring of training loads.

Final thought?

I admit: I’m proud to be part of the family again.
