Robin Gosens Joins Union Berlin for Preseason Amid Transfer Speculation

Union Berlin has started its preseason preparations. A few European Championship players were still missing, but the majority of the team was there – also there was Robin Gosens, whose future is not entirely clear.

Robin Gosens came to Union Berlin from Inter Milan last season and established himself as a regular player for the Irons (30 Bundesliga games, six goals, four assists, kicker average rating: 3.72). However, it was not clear recently whether he would continue to play in Köpenick in the future, and there was interest in the winger from Italy: Bergamo, Bologna, Lazio and FC Turin are said to have put out feelers.

In Berlin, however, they were relaxed. “Like all the other players, he will be here on July 1st. He still has a contract with us, so we’ll go by that,” said sports director Horst Heldt in a media round a few days ago. And that was the case: the 29-year-old was there on Monday for the start of preparations.

Gosens, who most recently worked as a TV expert at MagentaTV had certainly convinced, was part of the first group of professionals, together with Christopher Trimmel and new signings Ivan Prtajin and Rani Khedira, to undergo medical tests at the Charité in Berlin.

Not everyone on board

Meanwhile, a second group completed their first performance tests on the training grounds at the An der Alten Försterei stadium. On Tuesday, things will be the other way round, before the new coach Bo Svensson invites them to their first ball training session on Wednesday. This will be open to the public.

The Dane will not be able to welcome all of the players, as the European Championship participants Frederik Rönnow (Denmark), Andras Schäfer (Hungary), Leopold Querfeld (Austria), Tymoteusz Puchacz (Poland) and Laszlo Benes (Slovakia), who was recently signed from HSV, are still missing. Goalkeeper coach Michael Gspurning is also missing, as he is still at the European Championships as the Austrians’ goalkeeping coach.

Union Berlin will play its first friendly match of the preparation next Saturday (3.30 p.m.) against regional league team BSG Chemie Leipzig. On July 13, the Iron Ones will travel to Längenfeld in Austria for a six-day training camp – it will be the first of two planned training camps. The second is planned for July 28 to August 3 in Neuruppin, Brandenburg.
