Roger Federer Reflects on Retirement and Respect for Athletes in Recent Podcast Interview

Roger Federer, who was at Wimbledon this Thursday to watch Andy Murray’s doubles match with his brother, recently spoke on Trevor Noah’s podcast.

After classily discussing the future of his former Big 4 colleagues, the Swiss explained why he was particularly enjoying his “retirement”.

“Watching the Roland Garros final between Alcaraz and Zverev, I thought, ‘I’ve done that too.’ I’ve done it many times. We were talking about the 1,526 matches I’ve played and I realized that I’ve played a lot of tennis and marathon tennis. I’m so relieved that I don’t have to go through that anymore. I mean it was fun, but especially towards the end, I remember the warm-ups, the breaks and the warm-ups to go play a match. It was a monumental effort. Now you say, ‘What’s the big deal? It’s just tennis.’ Yes, it’s just tennis, but it’s your life and you tried to do your best in front of people. Now I feel really relieved and I consider that any athlete or any person who gives their best has all my respect.”
