Sacha Vezenkov Returns to Olympiakos: A European Basketball Comeback

Contrary to statements from Toronto journalists in recent days, which reported the Raptors’ desire to count on Sacha Vezenkov next season, the Bulgarian power forward will indeed return to Europe. He has signed for several seasons with Olympiakos – his former club – in Greece.

The NBA is over for Sacha Vezenkov… well, for now. The now ex-Kings and Raptors player has chosen, according to Greek media Sport DNA. MVP of the 2022-23 EuroLeague season, the power forward never really got his chance in Sacramento with only 42 games played, also due to a sprained ankle he suffered in January and which worsened afterwards.

His transfer to the Raptors was probably the straw that broke the camel’s back in the half-empty glass, anyway, that’s the saying. Eager for playing time and a basketball style that suits him, Vezenkov once again sold his talents to Olympiakos (where he played between 2018 and 2023), a big Greek team that competes for the top spots in the EuroLeague almost every year.

Like Sacha, other big names in the European game have not made the transition to the NBA. The most recent example is of course Milos Teodosic, who left for the Clippers after dominating at the highest level on the old continent. Vasilije Micic is doing a little better, with a fairly successful second half of the 2023-24 season with the Hornets.
