Samuel Piette’s Commitment to Canada Shines Through Despite Lack of International Match Play

Midfielder Samuel Piette has no intention of letting Canada down on the international stage, even though he didn’t play in any of the last World Cup or Copa America matches.

In an interview with RDS before the game between CF Montreal and the New York Red Bulls, Piette, who before Wednesday had not played a game in his last 46 days, was categorical: there was no question of refusing invitations from the national team. “I know there are questions about whether I should leave the national team to focus on my club. For me, it’s not even an option. I think the two go well together. If you do well with your club, that’s where your chances of being called up by the national team are best.”

Piette knows he can help Canada in many ways and he’s willing to settle for whatever seat the leadership wants to give him. “For me, my role on the team will always be in the hands of the coach, who is currently Jesse Marsch. If he believes I can help the team, as we saw at the Copa America even though I didn’t play, but by being there for the group in training, for the atmosphere or for my leadership, it will always be a pleasure for me to be there. Never, ever, will I turn my back on the national team.”

Now that the international calendar is a thing of the past, Piette, who played his 176th match with the CFM on Wednesday, which allows him to join Evan Bush for first place in club history, is keen to finish his MLS season strong to help Montreal reach the playoffs.

He believes that he and his teammates have a knife between their teeth and that they must take advantage of the fact that the squad is at full strength to collect points in the hope of playing beyond the regular season.
