On their way back to the NBA playoffs, former champion San Antonio Spurs have added another piece of the puzzle to their roster.

The Golden State Warriors did not want to continue with Chris Paul, but now, according to several media reports in the USA, the 39-year-old point guard will continue with the San Antonio Spurs. The strategist would therefore play alongside last season’s Rookie of the Year, Victor Wembanyama.

“CP3”, known for his brilliant passes and elegant mid-range jump shots, is set to receive a one-year contract in Texas worth eleven million dollars. The Warriors, who will also lose “Splash Brother” Klay Thompson, will save a lot of taxes by parting ways with Paul.

The veteran with 19 NBA seasons under his belt slipped out of the starting five for the first time in his career last season, averaging just 9.2 points and 6.8 assists for the “Dubs” – with a 44 percent hit rate. The season ended disappointingly for the Warriors with an exit from the play-in tournament.

Good future prospects for Spurs

The Spurs hope that the squad expansion will lead to a further improvement in performance and certainly significantly increase their chances of returning to the playoffs, in which the five-time champion (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2014) has not been represented since 2019.

With top pick Wembanyama, however, the team of coaching legend Gregg Popovich returned to the media spotlight. The Frenchman helped the Spurs to clearly improve their performance, but this was not yet reflected in their win total (22-60, second to last place in the strong Western Conference).

“CP3” has been to the All-Star Game twelve times in his career and is third in the all-time list for assists and steals. His brilliant passes and his understanding of a functioning pick-and-roll have made many other NBA pros even better.

San Antonio, however, can be expected to be a factor again in the coming years. The Spurs recently picked up a highly talented college guard, Stephon Castle (Connecticut Huskies), at number four in the draft and have a number of other high-ranking picks in future drafts.
