Scouting Abroad: Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga Clubs Turning to International Talent

The trend is clear. Because fully trained professionals from overseas are no longer affordable for most clubs in the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga in the bidding war with top European clubs, the sports directors systematically comb through smaller leagues in search of suitable players. This is also the concept of the Veolia Towers Hamburg.

The ninth-placed team has now dug up Keondre Kennedy (24) in the second Italian league and given the guard (1.98 meters) a one-year contract.

It will be the athletic American’s second season in Europe. Kennedy spent the first season with the fifth-placed team in the Legadue in Turin. “Keondre is comparable to a rough diamond,” says Towers boss Marvin Willoughby (46). “He brings a lot with him, but still needs to be polished to fully shine. His work ethic fits in perfectly with that. We are therefore confident that the next step in development can be successful in Hamburg.”

The football fan got into basketball through his mother. “She had a big influence on me,” says Kennedy. He spent hours playing two-on-two with his big sister Kenyetta in the backyard against his mom and dad. Because his grades were bad at school, he initially had problems finding a college. But Kennedy studied hard – and was accepted by UMBC in Baltimore.

Towers coach Benka Barloschky (36) is also convinced of Kennedy’s potential: “His ability to create his own shot in one-on-one situations is something we were looking for. Due to his athleticism, he exerts enormous pressure on the rim. Defensively, he is able to defend several positions and thus ensures a lot of variability.”

Trevion Williams from Ulm to Alba?

At Ratiopharm Ulm, the rebuilding process begins after the change of coach from Anton Gavel (39/to Bamberg) to Ty Harrelson (43/comes from Vechta).

Good and bad for the 2023 champions: For the first time ever, two top talents from a BBL team were drafted by the NBA: Pacome Dadiet (18/France) from the New York Knicks, Juan Nunez (20/Spain) from the San Antonio Spurs.

Top center Trevion Williams (23) is also in contact with Alba Berlin, according to Serbian media reports.

One thing is clear, however: Philip Hecker (22) is leaving after just one season at the OrangeAcademy (ProB) and is moving to relegated Tigers Tübingen in the ProA. His contract with Ulm was terminated to enable him to take the next step.

Heidelberg sorts out little dog

There is also a farewell at the MLP Academics Heidelberg. Audience favorite Bennet Hundt (25) has to leave after one and a half seasons. The club has not renewed the ex-national player’s (11 international matches) expired contract. The smallest professional in the BBL (only 1.80 meters) has to look for a new employer…

Heidelberg’s sporting director Alex Vogel: “We have all grown very fond of him. That is one of the reasons why this decision was even more difficult for us. Bennet has great qualities and his new club can look forward to a top professional in all areas.”
