Sebastian Villa Joins Independiente Rivadavia: A Controversial Move

Sebastian Villa was introduced in Independiente Rivadavia

Independiente Rivadavia de Mendoza is so far one of the teams in the Professional League that has made the most moves in the transfer market and, among the reinforcements that arrived at Lepra to join the squad led by Martín Cicotello, there was one that caused a media impact: Sebastián Villa.

The 28-year-old Colombian striker returned to Argentine football after a season at Beroe in Bulgaria, where he had left after being sentenced to two and a half years in prison for gender violence against Daniela Cortés and after Boca Juniors – following the sentence – removed him from the professional squad, a situation due to which the Colombian decided to leave the club from La Ribera.

His contract with the Bulgarian team expired on June 30 and he did not want to renew it. This brought to an end a brief period in Europe in which he played 11 matches, scored 5 goals and provided one assist. Beroe finished eleventh in the table among 16 teams and the championship ended on April 21.

“I am very happy to be at Lepra. My expectation is that we can have a great tournament and stay in the First Division,” he said in a video posted on the Mendoza club’s official social media. “I am eager to contribute my best version, to do things well, to not spare a drop of sweat and to help the team,” he insisted.

“Sebastián Villa. Humility, effort and heart,” says the message along with the presentation video. Meanwhile, in another post where a photo of the attacker born in Bello is shown in one of the training sessions, they welcomed him and baptized him with the striking nickname “Caudillo.”

“Welcome, Caudillo!” was the message with which Independiente Rivadavia received Villa

The signing caused repercussions due to the player’s criminal record. It should be remembered that despite the criminal conviction, Villa is not prohibited from playing football anywhere in the world. He has another case open for sexual abuse with carnal access against Tamara Doldán, whose process was settled out of court between the parties with the victim three days before the start of the trial that was to be on April 1. However, the prosecutor and the judge in charge opposed it and now the final decision will be in the hands of the Chamber.

If the process is reactivated and Villa is sent to trial, if found guilty, he could be sent directly to prison due to his criminal record.

In terms of football, the former Deportes Tolima player arrives to replace Matías Reali, who left for San Lorenzo. Other new additions that Lepra presented are Gonzalo Álvez, Agustín Mulet and Luis Sequeira. In total there are twelve new faces.

Independiente Rivadavia will be banking on the Colombian’s imbalance in one-on-one situations, as well as his change of pace, speed and goal-scoring ability to remain in the top flight.

The team from Mendoza is currently in the relegation zone, with 22 games left until the end of the season. It is last in the average table. It is also at risk in the annual table, where it is in 24th place among 28 teams. In the Professional League, it is eighth after five games, with 7 points, 3 behind the leaders, Racing, Talleres de Córdoba, Huracán and Unión de Santa Fe. When the action resumes, it will receive Gimnasia de La Plata on Thursday, July 18, for the 6th game.
