Serge Ibaka Leaves FC Bayern to Join New EuroLeague Club

Center Serge Ibaka is leaving the German basketball champions and cup winners FC Bayern and will join another EuroLeague club. The 34-year-old came to Munich a year ago, but where Ibaka, who played in the North American NBA for 14 seasons, will go is not yet known.

The 2019 NBA champion was Bayern’s top scorer in the European elite league with an average of 12.6 points and was also number one in this category with almost six rebounds. The Congolese native with a Spanish passport, who is actually known as a defensive specialist, also scored double-digit points on average in the league.

Ibaka thanked FC Bayern for the trust they placed in him when he signed him last year. “At a time when many people doubted me, FC Bayern Basketball gave me a chance,” he said in the club’s statement. Managing director Marko Pesic explained: “Looking back, we see it as a great honor for our club that Serge made his move back to Europe after his successful time in the NBA with us in Munich.”

Previous coach Pablo Laso and sporting director Daniele Baiesi had already announced that they would be leaving FC Bayern.
