In an entertaining match, Georgia fought bravely and selflessly for a long time, but ultimately had to admit defeat to the overwhelming dominance of the Spanish. La Furia Roja won 4:1 and now has to face Germany in the quarter-finals.

The goals

0:1 Robin Le Normand (18./own goal)
1:1 Rodri (39.)
2:1 Fabian (51.)
3:1 Nico Williams (75.)
4:1 Dani Olmo (83.)

The England of the game

The first game of the evening cast a long shadow over the following match. Jude Bellingham’s dream goal could hardly disguise the fact that England once again played little attractive football.

Things were different for the passionate Georgians, whose national flag, like the English one, consists of the St. George’s Cross. This is why an X-user’s observation applies: “Georgia is simply the better England.”

Slip of the tongue of the game

France is not Spain. ARD commentator Tom Bartels briefly forgot this, however, and confirmed that the French referee Francois Letexier was a Spanish citizen. The faux pas did not go unnoticed on social media either.

“Spanish referee?!” writes a user on X. “Now imagine if Neumann had said that. She would have been torn apart again, from all sides.” ZDF commentator Claudia Neumann has been harshly criticized in the past for small mistakes.

Quote of the 90 minutes

“He always seems like a calming influence – and that in the permanent eye of the hurricane.” ARD commentator Tom Bartels expressed his enthusiasm for Georgian defender Giorgi Mamardashvili – possibly the best goalkeeper of the tournament so far.

The 23-year-old ensured that Georgia stayed in the game for a long time, but he also had no chance when the goals were scored against him. The Valencia goalkeeper bids farewell to the European Championship with a respectable letter of recommendation for the top international clubs.

Number of game: 15

The Spanish dominance at half-time (1:1) was not evident from the score, but the statistics certainly did. Luis de la Fuente’s team had 15 more shots than Georgia in the first half (17 to two) – the second biggest difference in the first half of a European Championship since data collection began. The last time such superiority was seen was when the Netherlands beat Latvia in 2004.

The worst-ager of the game

Free kick for Spain, 51st minute, score: 1:1. Lamine Yamal should actually be in bed, but an exception for professional athletes allows him to still pursue his profession. “Look who is standing there now, at 16. Now we can open up the hierarchy issue again”says MagentaTV commentator Jan Platte.

“But no matter how old you are, if you are an excellent free kick taker, you are happy to take responsibility.”

The free kick hits the wall, but less than a minute later Yamal assists with a precise cross for Fabián’s 2-1 lead. The “hierarchy issue” was thus also resolved.

THE scene of the game

Rodri is the man for the important goals. Last year he scored the winning goal in the Champions League final for Manchester City, and on Sunday he scored the equaliser that was so important for Spain. Nico Williams puts the ball back to the edge of the penalty area, where arguably the best number six in the world is waiting and hits the bottom right corner with his left foot. As a result, Spain clearly dominated the game.

What’s next for the teams

It’s a top duel: Spain will face the German national team in the quarter-finals on Friday at 6 p.m. in Stuttgart. Georgia will travel home.

In a match that was not only meteorologically turbulent, Germany ultimately deservedly beat Denmark 2-0 and moved into the European Championship quarter-finals.
