COLOGNE (ANP/AFP) – Spain’s national coach Luis de la Fuente believes that the victory over Georgia (4-1) in the round of 16 of the European Championship in Germany could have been even bigger. “The result is deceptive because it could have been 8-1 or 9-1,” said the 63-year-old coach.

“We are very happy because we know what it takes to get here, and what the other teams have been through shows that,” De la Fuente said on Spanish television. “They couldn’t get a shot in and we took advantage of our chances, so we are very happy.”

Spain fell behind early in Cologne with an own goal from Robin Le Normand. Rodri levelled the score before half-time, before Fabián Ruiz, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo secured their ticket to the quarter-finals in the second half.

Spain will play host country Germany on Friday for a place in the semi-finals. “First we have to recover,” De la Fuente said. “Against Germany we have to be ourselves, we have to keep enjoying football. We have to show our best game, there is no other way.”
