Spanish Badminton Player Makes Strong Start at Canada Open, Qualifies for Final Draw

The Spanish badminton player has made a good start at the Canada Open, a Super 500 category tournament on the BWF World Tour circuit that is being held in Calgary. In her first match she beat local player Lyric Su by 21-16 and 21-17, certifying her qualification for the final draw. Pablo Abián, who makes his debut this Wednesday, is also in this round.

It was not the most comfortable match for the Spaniard, as the young Canadian player tried to take the initiative from the start. In fact, she took the lead in the early stages of the match. However, Setién was quick to take control, with a 6-0 run that allowed him to take the lead (12-8) and get on track in the first game.

Lyric Su regained control at the start of the second game and managed to stay ahead for much of it. But once again, when the San Sebastian native was four points down (15-11), she scored another six consecutive points to take the lead and finished the match without hesitation.

In the next round, Setién faces a major challenge: he will face the Japanese Natsuki Nidaira, number 31 in the world ranking and recent US Open champion. This match will be the ninth on Court 1, so it will be played around 11:00 p.m. (Spanish time).

One round before Setién’s match, Pablo Abián will make his debut, having qualified directly for the final draw. The Aragonese also plays a tremendously demanding match, as he faces Czech Jan Louda again. It should be remembered that Abián has won three of the five matches against Louda and that he is in good form, having just been proclaimed runner-up at the Nantes International.
