Speyer Turtles Take Home Victory Despite Rain in Baseball Home Game

The heavy rain initially prevented the Speyer Turtles from doing even better at their home game on Sunday.

In the morning, in light drizzle, they started their first match against the fourth team of the Mainz Athletics, still optimistic about the weather forecast. They had one win and one loss against the Rheinhessen this season. Coach Frank Brzoska was aiming for two wins against Mainz and the other visiting team, the Sankt Ingbert Devils.

Special rules

The Turtles started as hosts on the defensive. Pitcher Jonny Collet had a good day, and with the help of his pitch, the Mainz team only scored two runs. Even at bat, Speyer managed to score three points thanks to two hits and an error by the Mainz team. The Athletics only shortened the lead slightly, while the Turtles took advantage of the somewhat wild pitching.

A double by Darjan Vig, five walks and clever base running brought the team an 8-3 lead after the second inning. A rule in the development league, which ends a half-inning after five runs, prevented anything more. Another five runs (Michael Teßin’s double, five walks) brought the score to 13-4. The time limit then began the last round. Two points from the Athletics brought the final score to 13-6.

The second duel between Sankt Ingbert and Mainz ended with the game being abandoned with the score at 3:2 for the Saarlanders due to the increasingly heavy rain. The rain didn’t stop, making the pitch unplayable, and since the weather didn’t look like it was going to improve anyway, the clubs are looking for a rescheduled date for this match and the third showdown between the turtles and the devil.

This is how they played

Jochen Bodenseh 3 points, Maxim Pietrzala, Marco Geider, Michael Teßin, Steffi Stelzer 2 each, Darjan Vig, Dominik Krämer 1 each, Hans Hammer, Jonny Collet, Jonathan Schröer.
