Stan Wawrinka Falls to Gaël Monfils in Second Round of Wimbledon, Swiss Players Out

  • Stan Wawrinka (ATP 95) is eliminated in the second round of Wimbledon against Gaël Monfils (ATP 33).
  • The continuation of the match, which was interrupted on Wednesday, lasted only 10 minutes before the Frenchman won 7:6 (7:5), 6:4, 7:6 (7:3).
  • With Wawrinka, the last Swiss player of all genders has been eliminated at Church Road.

Stan Wawrinka’s good start after the resumption on Thursday was deceptive: the Swiss and Gaël Monfils were on the court for just 10 minutes before Wawrinka had to congratulate the Frenchman at the net on his entry into the third round.

Wawrinka’s punches have no effect

The French-speaking player started with his own serve at 5:5 and did not give up a point on the way to 6:5. But because Wawrinka was also unable to do much with his opponent’s serve, the third set came down to a quick decision. The tiebreak then reflected the entire match, most of which had already been played on Wednesday.

Monfils let Wawrinka take the initiative in the rallies, but the 39-year-old from Lausanne found no way to put the two-year-younger player in a tight spot. Monfils ultimately acted much more calmly, winning the tiebreak 7:3 and the match over two days after a total of 2 hours and 3 minutes with 7:6 (7:5), 6:4, 7:6 (7:3).

Monfils better in key moments

Monfils had already been the stronger player in the decisive rallies on Wednesday. In the first set, the two experienced players were on equal terms. It was even Wawrinka who had the only break chance of the set. However, the player from Lausanne missed a seemingly simple forehand and later lost in the tiebreak. In the second set, Monfils only managed one break – it was to be the only one of the match – to pull ahead to 2-0 sets.

All Swiss out

Wawrinka’s exit in the second round also means that after the fourth day of Wimbledon, there are no Swiss players left in the tournament, at least in the “big” women’s or men’s singles. Dominic Stricker and Viktorija Golubic were already eliminated in the first round.

In the junior tournament, which only begins on Saturday, there will be at least one Swiss player, Henry Bernet, competing in the individual competition.
