Staying the Course: Nagelsmann Says Germany is Far from Paradigm Shift

“We are a long way from a paradigm shift”

When asked by MagentaTV expert Michael Ballack whether Nagelsmann would use a three-man defense as he did at times in the round of 16 against Denmark, he replied: “We don’t necessarily plan to do that, but of course we want to be prepared for it without having to make substitutions. Of course, Rob can do that too. But Emre has more speed at 35 km/h. That’s a weapon that Spain has on the wings, where we want to have an additional pace player on the pitch. Emre runs 35 and that’s good to know.”

Nagelsmann also asserted that the renewed change in the starting eleven was not a paradigm shift. He continued to rely on “13 players who get more playing time than the others – and that is still the case. We are a long way from a paradigm shift.”

The fact that Can joined the team late would not change that. The 30-year-old was called up because Aleksandar Pavlovic was ill again.

In addition to Can, there is another substitution compared to the Denmark game: Jonathan Tah returns to the starting eleven after his yellow card suspension for Nico Schlotterbeck.
