Steffen Freund Shocks Fans with Departure from RTL During Euro 2024

Hammer at RTL! In the middle of the round of 16 matches of the 2024 European Championship, Steffen Freund announced his departure from the station – with immediate effect. Switzerland – Italy (2:0) was the last game as an expert on the microphone.

Why? And why in the middle of the 2024 European Championship? RTL and Steffen Freund are keeping quiet about this. But his farewell message does not sound like there is any bad blood.

RTL bombshell: Steffen Freund gone

For ten years he covered the live games on RTL and Nitro. At that time, the private broadcaster was still a small light in the football landscape. Today it has established itself thanks to many live broadcasts of European Championship qualifiers, the Europa and Conference League and now even twelve games of the 2024 European Championship. Freund was always part of it – and from now on he will no longer be.

Shortly before Switzerland vs. Italy, he announced out of nowhere that the round of 16 match would be his last appearance for the private broadcaster. He did not give any background information. It had already been leaked that his contract would expire on June 30. It remains unclear who took the step and decided to part ways.

TV expert announces RTL farewell

“Every single match day was a football festival and is now the most successful sports broadcast on the Cologne station,” writes the 54-year-old on Instagram. “A big THANK YOU to all colleagues and friends with whom I have been able to work over the years.” He particularly highlights commentator Marco Hagemann, alongside whom he covered the games on RTL for many years.

More current news:

Who Hagemann’s new colleague will be should be clear by the quarter-finals at the latest. In the round of the last eight, RTL will again show a game live on free TV in cooperation with MagentaTV.
