Striker Sardar Azmoun Causes Concern at Bayer Leverkusen as Future Remains Uncertain

Once lured away from Saint Petersburg with some advance praise, Iranian Sardar Azmoun (29), back from his one-year loan from Roma, is once again causing long faces in Leverkusen.

Several hundred fans flocked to the first training session of the double winner Bayer Leverkusen in the new season. If they had hoped to be able to take a closer look at striker Sardar Azmoun (29) after a long absence, they were bitterly disappointed. The Iranian was surprisingly absent from the opening match, although he was still the day before photos of his performance test in Leverkusen shared on Instagram with his over five million followers.

According to media reports, sports boss Simon Rolfes (42) was also extremely irritated after training on Monday afternoon: “You not only have to do the performance diagnostics, you also have to train. He was there yesterday, but not today. That was visible – so we have to clarify what is going on.” In other words: Those responsible at Leverkusen were also surprised by Azmoun’s absence.

No prospects in Leverkusen

The Iranian, signed by Zenit St. Petersburg in 2022 and loaned to AS Roma last season, continues to puzzle Bayer officials and has no future in Leverkusen.

In his current form, the Iranian will hardly be able to get past top scorer Patrik Schick or shooting star Victor Boniface. In addition, Adam Hlozek (21) is another highly talented attacker who is keen to play more in coach Xabi Alonso’s (42) team. In Rome, too, the Iranian international only managed a modest three goals in 23 games, which is why Roma decided not to offer him a purchase option.

The striker’s market is limited

The double winner is therefore reportedly searching intensively for a buyer for the 29-year-old, who was never able to justify the originally high expectations even during his only Bundesliga season in 2022/2023 (5 goals in 32 Bundesliga games). Traces to Olympique Lyon or Fenerbahce Istanbul currently seem to have faded somewhat. According to information from kicker, new options are now FC Sevilla, which was struggling last year, as well as clubs from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

While the latter are apparently interested in buying the attacker, the Andalusians apparently only want to loan the attacker. However, that does not seem to be a serious option for Bayer officials at the moment, and the collaboration is set to end for good this summer.
