In the first set, Daniel Altmaier slipped and remained lying on the grass at Wimbledon until help arrived. After that, the German tennis pro still moved into the second round of the Grand Slam classic. He follows Jan-Lennard Struff, who surprised everyone with his new hair.

Despite a moment of shock, Daniel Altmaier followed his tennis colleague Jan-Lennard Struff into the second round at Wimbledon. In a five-set match, the Kempen native beat British outsider Arthur Fery 4:6, 7:6 (8:6), 1:6, 6:3, 6:1 at the start of the classic. After an up and down, Altmaier was able to use the favorable draw to reach the second round at Wimbledon for the first time. Fery is only ranked 247th in the world rankings and got into the main draw thanks to a wildcard. Altmaier’s next opponent is now Canadian Denis Shapovalov.

In the first set, Altmaier slipped when the score was 3:4 and initially remained lying on the grass until medical help arrived. After a break for treatment, the world number 80 was able to continue playing. Altmaier also received treatment again at the start of the fourth set.

Before Altmaier, Struff had already successfully started the third Grand Slam tournament of the season with freshly bleached hair. The Sauerland native beat the Hungarian Fabian Marozsan 6:4, 6:7 (4:7), 6:2, 6:3. The world number 43 will now face the Chinese Zhang Zhizhen. “I am very happy with the way I played and that I won,” said Struff: “It is wonderful to be here. Even after several years, you still appreciate it because it is so beautiful here.” His girlfriend was responsible for his new look. “Fortunately, it worked,” he said with a smile. The tournament is over for Maximilian Marterer, however, after a 3:6, 1:6, 4:6 defeat to Roberto Bautista Agut from Spain.

The end also came for qualifier Eva Lys, who missed the second round in her main draw debut at Wimbledon. The 22-year-old from Hamburg was eliminated with a 2:6, 4:6 defeat against the French Clara Burel and said goodbye after just 61 minutes. Having won three rounds in qualifying, the world number 129 Lys took part in the grass court classic in London for the first time. Tamara Korpatsch also had to give up her hopes after a disappointing 2:6, 1:6 defeat against the Briton Yuriko Lily Miyazaki.

Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber are eagerly awaiting their start at Wimbledon – with different prospects. In her duel with Kazakh world number 35 Yulia Putintseva, Kerber is counting on developing that special feeling again. A piece of the flow that carried her to the title in 2018. Zverev also wants to develop this feeling for the surface that he has not liked so far and sees himself as anything but without a chance this year before his first match against Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena.
