Struggles of the León Badminton Team at the 2024 Conade National Games: Coach Highlights Psychological Weaknesses

León, Gto.- Only one bronze medal was obtained by the Leonese badminton team that attended the 2024 Conade National Games. This result does not entirely satisfy coach Bernardo Monreal, although he recognizes that his team was weakened by injuries and the psychological burden at key moments.

For this discipline, which took place in Campeche, the representative from Guanajuato was only able to harvest a bronze medal, obtained by Regina Campos from León in the U-15 singles.

As for the ‘Guanajua’ team, it was made up of nine badminton players, five from León and four from Salamanca, although the representatives from the oil city were eliminated in the first round of their respective categories.

The hope of winning medals fell on the Under-19 division with the Leonese, Edgar Estrada and Ricardo Campos, the latter suffered an injury to the Achilles tendon of his right foot which ended up truncating the possibility of fighting for a medal in singles and in men’s doubles where he had to be paired with Estrada, who in his individual event was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

“This matter of ‘Richie’s’ injury was a ‘pull’, that’s what the doctors who treated him told us. It’s an injury that took time, wear and tear from the work inherent to the sport, because it hit his right foot, which is the one with which you always go forward, you always move forward with the right foot. It was something surprising, he was playing his singles. But it was an unforeseen event, something that comes out unexpectedly in sports. That injury left us with no options to look for something else in doubles,” highlighted coach Bernardo Monreal.

With León being the main breeding ground for badminton talent in Guanajuato, the achievement of just one medal does not entirely satisfy coach Monreal, who, in his diagnosis, recognizes the lack of strengthening psychological work among the athletes.

“It is definitely a consequence of the psychological aspect. They get to the important stages, to the tight scores in the matches or the sets and that is where the players fall down, and that is where the results go. We need to work on that part with the boys. Badminton is a match that requires a lot of concentration, that is my diagnosis. We have already spoken with the parents. The boy who wants to make the jump to high performance must work on his mind. It is a part that should not be neglected,” concluded coach Monreal in a talk with Noticias Vespertinas.

It should be noted that badminton in León is offered at the Antonio ‘Tota’ Carbajal sports unit as part of the Comude León Sports Initiation Schools program. Meanwhile, current municipal players such as Regina Campos, Edgar Estrada and Ricardo Campos have already represented the country in international tournaments.
