BILD then learned that Schmadtke had already said goodbye to the players by cellphone that morning because he was quitting his job at Borussia – and the team knew about it before the medical checks on Monday!

After the season, Schmadtke assured BILD that he would continue to fulfil his contract with Borussia. Now Schmadtke says: “I have been at Borussia for the third time now and I wouldn’t want to miss any of these experiences. The bottom line is that in this constellation it wasn’t a 100 percent fit for either side. Therefore, a separation is the best decision for everyone.”
In the future, parts of Schmadtke’s duties will be taken over by David Zibung (40), who is moving from FC Luzern to Borussia as licensed sports coordinator with immediate effect.
