Sudden Departure: Nils Schmadtke Leaves Borussia Gladbach Amid New Season Preparations

Next Wednesday (3 p.m.), Gladbach will start its preparations for the new Bundesliga season with its first training session under coach Gerardo Seoane (45).

Borussia invited the press representatives before the reunion to a round of talks with President Rainer Bonhof (72) and the managing directors Roland Virkus (57) and Markus Aretz (56) about the new season.

Not listed was sporting director Nils Schmadtke (35), who would naturally have been included in such a round due to his role. Just a coincidence?

No!

New rumors emerged on Thursday about Schmadtke (BILD reported), who did not always seem happy in his first year in Gladbach – because apparently the framework of his work within the club was not clearly defined.

BILD then learned that Schmadtke had already said goodbye to the players by cellphone that morning because he was quitting his job at Borussia – and the team knew about it before the medical checks on Monday!

At midday, Gladbach itself confirmed Schmadtke’s lightning-fast departure!

Manager Virkus in a press release: “We sat down after the season and after intensive discussions we came to the joint conclusion to end our collaboration. However, we are parting on good terms. We would like to thank Nils for his commitment and the work he has done and wish him all the best for his professional and private future.”

A sudden departure that, despite everything, comes as a surprise.

After the season, Schmadtke assured BILD that he would continue to fulfil his contract with Borussia. Now Schmadtke says: “I have been at Borussia for the third time now and I wouldn’t want to miss any of these experiences. The bottom line is that in this constellation it wasn’t a 100 percent fit for either side. Therefore, a separation is the best decision for everyone.”

In the future, parts of Schmadtke’s duties will be taken over by David Zibung (40), who is moving from FC Luzern to Borussia as licensed sports coordinator with immediate effect.
