Swiss Badminton Duo Headed to Paris Olympics: Meet Jenny Stadelmann

Swiss badminton will experience a rare moment in Paris. This is the first time since the Beijing Games in 2008 that two badminton players will represent Switzerland at the Olympic Games. In addition to the Aargau player Tobias Künzi, Zurich’s Jenjira Stadelmann will also be present thanks to her good results. And it almost didn’t happen. RTSsport went to meet the 24-year-old athlete.

A year after her third place at the European Games in Krakow, Jenny Stadelmann will compete in her first Olympic Games. Born in Thailand to a Swiss father and a Thai mother, she had decided to stop playing badminton at 16 to start university in veterinary medicine. But things changed on her first trip to Switzerland.

Paris Olympics, D-12: discovery of badminton player Jenny Stadelmann / Sport Sunday / 3 min. / yesterday at 6:40 p.m.

“I had seriously injured my back and couldn’t train anymore. I told my parents that I didn’t want to do sports anymore,” says Stadelmann. “I came to Switzerland with my dad, and suddenly Hanspeter Kolb, president of the St. Gallen-Appenzell club, gave me a chance to make a sports career. I thought, ‘I’m 16, why not try to take advantage of this opportunity when my back is better’.”

Sabrina Jaquet from Neuchâtel, who took part in the last three Olympic Games and retired from sport after Tokyo, knows the Swiss No. 1 well. “She is very offensive, she really plays modern badminton. If she manages to be fit, without injury, she can be very dangerous.” Jenny Stadelmann is looking forward to going to Paris and is pursuing the goal of gaining as much experience as possible without putting herself under pressure to achieve results from Saturday, July 27 at the Arena Porte de La Chapelle.
