Tales of Hurricanes: Stories from Italy and Lithuania in Puerto Rico’s FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament

Hurricanes do not pass through Italy, and even less so through Lithuania, but the damage left by hurricanes may reach those countries in the form of stories worth telling.

The forecasted passage of Hurricane Beryl to the south of the Island will coincide with the stay in Puerto Rico of the teams from Italy and Lithuania, among others, who have traveled to the Island to play in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum starting tomorrow Tuesday along with Mexico, Ivory Coast, Bahrain and Puerto Rico.

And some of the visiting teams have shown themselves to be familiar with and curious about the phenomenon in conversation with this newspaper, which brought the subject to their attention.

Italian player Nicolo Melli, for example, is one of those who is familiar with hurricanes.

“I played one year in New Orleans, so I’m kind of used to it. Hopefully it won’t happen, but it’s part of nature. You have to deal with it,” said the veteran center who played with the New Orleans NBA franchise in 2021.

New Orleans, naturally, was a victim of the devastating passage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Lithuanian player Azuolas Tubelis, for his part, said he was unaware of the issue of hurricanes to the point that he asked what he should do to protect himself.

Tubelis reacted curiously as a foreigner and cautiously as a human being when talking about hurricanes, which he only knows about from aerial photos he has seen on his cell phone.

“I’ve seen them on my phone and they’re scary. Should I hide? I haven’t seen them in person. It’s exciting and bad at the same time,” she said.

Meanwhile, Bahrain’s manager, Jad El Hajj, was unaware of Beryl’s passage to southern Puerto Rico on Monday. The team from the country located in the Persian Gulf arrived in Puerto Rico on Sunday, after a 48-hour trip from its country in Western Asia.

“When is it going to happen?” he asked. “Hopefully not during game time. I honestly don’t know what’s going on. I’ll ask.”
