Tavares extends his contract with Real Madrid until 2029

MADRID, 5 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Cape Verdean player Walter Tavares extended his contract with Real Madrid until 2029, the club announced in a statement on Friday in which they celebrate the five-year renewal of the center, top blocker in the Endesa League and the Euroleague last season.

The African has already spent seven seasons at the white club, with which he has won 14 titles: 2 Euroleagues, 4 Leagues, 2 Copa del Reys and 6 Spanish Super Cups, being one of the key pieces of Real Madrid’s winning cycle in recent years.

He has also been chosen three times in a row in the Euroleague All-Star Team (2021, 2022 and 2023), and has also been part of the Endesa League All-Star Team on three occasions (2019, 2021 and 2023). His participation was also key in the Euroleague 2023 ‘Final Four’, being chosen as the best player, as well as in the Endesa League final in 2022.

Tavares is considered one of the best defensive players in Europe, wreaking havoc on the paint with his 2.21-metre height and 2.36-metre wingspan. He has also been voted the best defender in the Euroleague three times in 2019, 2021 and 2023, and in the Endesa League, four times in a row since 2021.

Since his arrival at the club, Walter Tavares has become a “fundamental player” for the white team, and a “differential” pivot in Europe, explained the statement from the Madrid club.

Last season, the best defender in the Endesa League recorded 9.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in the domestic competition, with 1.6 blocks and a PIR of 17.1, making him the sixth most valuable player in the category. In the Euroleague, his numbers were 9.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game, with a PIR of 15.6.
