The U.S. men’s Olympic team faced its first real test from the summer of a surprising source and passed, avoiding what would have been one of the most surprising defeats in 50 years for Team USA.

Marial Shayokborn in Canada, who plays professionally in China, led the South Sudanese with 25. James’ former Lakers teammate Wenyen Gabriel had 11 points for South Sudan; Carlik Jones, who has played in 12 NBA games in three seasons, added 15 points; and JT Thor, who played for the Charlotte Hornets but is currently not with a team, scored 14 points. Duke-bound Khaman Maluach scored 7 points off the bench.
At the Olympics, Team USA will play three Group C matches a little: On July 28 against Serbia, on July 31 against South Sudan and on August 3 against Puerto RicoThe knockout rounds will then move to Paris with the quarter-finals (August 6), semi-finals (August 8) and gold medal game (August 10) taking place at the Accor Arena.
