Tennis at the 2024 Olympics: Angelique Kerber moves into the quarterfinals of the Olympic Games

The German tennis player Angelique Kerber has reached the next round of the Olympic Games tournament. The former world number one Kerber beat the Canadian Leylah Fernandez 6:4 and 6:3 and can therefore still hope for an Olympic medal shortly before the end of her career. Either the American Emma Navarro or the Chinese Qinweng Zheng will now be waiting in the quarterfinals.

The convincing performances before seemed to have given Kerber a boost. She hardly made any mistakes in the first set against Fernandez, instead sending the Canadian skilfully across the court again and again. Although she was initially unable to defend the lead from the first break to 2-1, she took Fernandez’s serve once again to make it 4-3.

Third quarter-final appearance at the Olympic Games

In the second set, Kerber also showed strong form, which she had lacked in her disappointing tournament appearances before the Games. For the first time this year, the three-time Grand Slam winner is in a round of the last eight, something she had not managed since her maternity leave. At the same time, it is her third quarter-final appearance at the Olympic Games – according to the world association, no German tennis professional has ever achieved this before.

Later today, Kerber will be playing doubles alongside Laura Siegemund at the Olympic Games. Before the tournament, she had already announced that she wanted to end her career after the Games.

In the men’s singles, Hamburg’s Alexander Zverev defeated Czech Tomáš Macháč 6:3 and 7:5 and is now in the round of 16, where Australian Alexei Popyrin is waiting.
