Tennis: Zverev moves safely into round two at Wimbledon

Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev has confidently completed his first round task at Wimbledon. A good three weeks after losing the French Open final, the 27-year-old from Hamburg started the third Grand Slam tournament of the season with a comfortable 6:2, 6:4, 6:2 win against Roberto Carballes Baena from Spain. In the second round, the German number one will face Marcos Giron from the USA or the Briton Henry Searle.

After 1 hour and 53 minutes, the world number four converted the first match point. While the matches on the outdoor courts had to be interrupted several times on a rainy day in London, Zverev played his match on the second largest court under a closed roof. Angelique Kerber, on the other hand, had to wait for her match. Laura Siegemund made it to the second round after rain interruptions.

After Zverev’s victory, three of the six German tennis players are now in the second round. On Monday, Jan-Lennard Struff and Daniel Altmaier managed to advance. Yannick Hanfmann and Maximilian Marterer were eliminated, and Dominik Koepfer had to withdraw at short notice due to injury.
