The Cacique is put on hold, Luis García is in trouble and Oviedo is thinking about Aguirre: this is the state of the negotiations

New plot twist on who will be the future tenant of the Real Oviedo bench. The arrival of Alexander “Cacique” Medina has cooled off in a few hours after he became the first candidate to succeed Luis Carrión in the position. The Uruguayan coach, who is one of the bets of Jesús Martínez, owner of the blue club, was positioned as the winning horse given the complications that Luis García is having to disassociate himself from the Qatar national team. The Asturian is the coach who generated consensus in both legs of the club: the Asturian and the Mexican. But the Qataris are resisting to terminate his contract.

And in this context, Javier Aguirre has joined the rest of the names linked to the Oviedo bench, who last season managed to keep Mallorca in the First Division and the runner-up position in the Copa del Rey. Although the option of Vasco Aguirre, a man very close to the Pachuca Group, seems quite complicated at the moment since he is one of the options that the Mexican Federation is considering to take charge of the Aztec team.

The new episode of the summer soap opera that is becoming the signing of the next Oviedo coach has its roots precisely in what has been happening for days, when Luis García was the favourite to command the blue ship. But, suddenly, the option of Cacique Medina, one of the candidates along with Luis García himself and Javi Calleja, gained strength in the last few hours in the face of the obstacles that Qatar is putting in place for the departure of the Asturian coach. According to several sources, the Qataris are not willing to facilitate the departure of the Oviedo native. What’s more, they did not even answer several calls from the former player’s agents.

Hence, the signing of Medina was activated and practically closed yesterday morning, which was highly contested by the Oviedo fans, who understood that the Uruguayan’s only experience in Spanish football was his hazy period at Granada, where he only won one of the fourteen games he managed. In the afternoon, LA NUEVA ESPAÑA announced in its digital edition that Oviedo had halted the signing of Cacique and was open to looking for more options apart from those already on the table. To all this we must add that so much back and forth in the choice of the new coach is becoming a stress test for those working in the blue offices in search of Carrión’s replacement.

That is why the club is now asking for patience and ensuring that it will take the necessary time to choose the new coach, as it is “a very important decision” that will mark the immediate future of a project that was on the verge of the long-awaited return to the First Division and that in the new season that begins in August wants to take a step further.

However, all the names that have been considered this week, to which Javier Aguirre is now added, a coach with proven experience who, without a doubt, would achieve the consensus of all parties, are still valid. Here we should include the most critical Oviedo sector, which yesterday vehemently rejected the Cacique Medina route. That is to say, despite so much back and forth, nothing is ruled out and the fact that the negotiation has cooled down does not mean that Oviedo no longer count on Cacique. He remains one of the options to occupy the Carbayón bench, as well as Luis García and Javi Calleja. A trio to which the name of Aguirre is now added, in which Oviedo is thinking of designing a new project that, this time, achieves the desired promotion to First Division. Although the first step that the blues must take is to sign their new coach.

The career of Cacique Medina, an option for the Oviedo bench that was stopped yesterday afternoon after a morning in which he was practically considered a sure thing, has earned him praise from football heavyweights, such as the Argentines “Cholo” Simeone and “Muñeco” Gallardo. The current Atlético de Madrid coach spoke of the Uruguayan when he stood out at the head of Talleres. “He has good game-finding,” Simeone emphasised then, when he also made an analysis of the coaching panorama: “How much difference is there between all the coaches? Very little. After Klopp, Mourinho, Guardiola, Zidane, they are all good. There are coaches with less name that work very well. Does the boy who is in Talleres (for Cacique Medina) have less idea than us? Surely not.” For his part, Marcelo “Muñeco” Gallardo also praised Medina’s work at the helm of Talleres: “I don’t want to lose focus on Sunday’s match, I know Cacique well as a person, I had him as a footballer and today I face him as a technical director. He is doing a great job at Talleres in a structure that has been behaving very well.”

And what is even more striking is that “Cacique” Medina has already coincided with one of the most notable players in the current Real Oviedo squad. It happened during his time at Internacional in Brazil, where he had the Brazilian striker Alemão under his command. Now, if at the end of the whole soap opera it is decided that Cacique is the final choice to replace Carrión, he could once again coincide with the Brazilian striker.
