The Growing Mystery of Victor Wembanyama: A Towering Presence in French Basketball

Clearly, nothing makes sense anymore with Victor Wembanyama. The French team’s match on Wednesday was a good example of this. We understood it well (or we don’t know, we don’t understand it because it’s sometimes unreal), we’ve never seen anyone do what he does at this size.

But where it gets really crazy is that we increasingly wonder what we’re talking about when we say “at this size”. Because he still seems to be growing. At least that’s the feeling I got watching the game on Wednesday.

Sidy Cissoko already asked the question at a press conference:

« It looks like he’s still growing. One day he’s like 7-3, 7-4. The next day he’s like 7-5. »

One might have thought that it was a manner of speaking, a way of saying that Wemby is excessive. But seeing him next to Rudy Gobert during France-Turkey, it’s hard not to wonder. Example with this photo of the team:

Rudy Gobert is supposed to be 2.16m (7-1)! If that’s the case, well I have the impression that Victor Wembanyama is over 2.24m (7-4), his “official” measurement listed for example on basket-référence.

Well, at this level, you might think that we’re not even a few centimeters away. But if it grows any more, in terms of deterrence and psychological impact, it could play a role. And in certain situations, if the trajectory of the shot has to go around three centimeters more or if you have to trigger your shot even earlier or hastily, it could be a real mess. As if it wasn’t already enough of a mess…
