The Ins and Outs of Tennis Training: The Fine Line Between Challenge and Cheating

Tennis is a sport that drives you crazy, even in training.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday after her victory over her compatriot Caroline Dolehide (6-1, 6-2) in the first round of Wimbledon, Cori Gauff explained that she had recently had a conversation about these players who could not help but cheat on questionable balls.

“I had a conversation with someone, I won’t say who. We had a conversation about how some players on tour like to challenge marks a little too much in practice. We had a good laugh about it. There are girls, I don’t know if it’s intentional or not, but they do it. For me, I don’t really take offense. A lot of times, they’re girls who were maybe cheaters in high school and kept that habit. Most of the time, I try to practice with people who don’t do that. For me, if it’s close, it could be in or out. But there are girls who deliberately declare that the ball is definitely inside the line. I know people are going to think that maybe it’s Ostapenko because she does that. But actually, she’s one of my favorite people to practice with. She’s just funny.” I think she genuinely believes her ball is always good, but she doesn’t do it in practice. It’s definitely other people.”
