The key stages of the 2024 Tour de France: profiles and routes

The Tour de France began its 111th edition on June 29, with Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz currently leading the Grande Boucle, on a day marked by the historic victory of Eritrean Biniam Girmay, becoming the first black rider to win a stage, in this case the third, in the Tour de France.

Behind Girmay, Colombian Fernando Gaviria came in second, with Belgian Arnaud de Lie, born in 2002, third in stage three yesterday. In the general classification, Slovenian Tadej Pogačar is second, with Belgian Remco Evenepoel rounding out the cyclists’ rankings.

In total, the Tour de France will cover 3,492 kilometres, with participants passing through four countries, including France, San Marino, the Vatican and Italy, and they will travel 25 kilometres at an altitude of over 2,000 metres, with two stages being a time trial.

That is why, with only three of the 21 stages having been contested until the end on 21 July, there are still challenging days ahead for the cyclists, as well as routes that will play a fundamental role in deciding who will be the champion of this edition of the Tour de France.

Fourth stage

With a route that will go from Pinnerollo to Valloire, today the cyclists will cover a distance equivalent to approximately 140 kilometers and with high mountains along the way.

An example of this is the Galibier pass, at 2,642 metres above sea level, which will be the highest pass that will be climbed in the first week of the competition’s history, although before then competitors will have to climb the Sestrières (2,035 metres) and Montgenèvre (1,860 metres) passes.

Seventh stage

This is the stage in which the riders will go from Nuits-Saint-Georges to Gevrey-Chambertin, and it is also the first time trial of the Tour, consisting of 25 kilometres.

Ninth stage

Comprising almost 200 kilometres and 14 sectors, on this Troyes – Troyes route the cyclists must avoid accidents and get into a good position to take victory in this stage.

Stage 15

Held on July 14, a national holiday in France, the fifteenth day of the Tour is the stage held in the Pyrenees, with ports such as Peyresourde or Col de la Menté as the main protagonists of the day, with a finish on the Plateau de Beille, with the last section consisting of almost 16 kilometers at a gradient of 7.9.

Stage 19

The Embrun – Isola 2000 stage, which is about 145 kilometres long, has three mountain passes over 2,000 metres and is a short route, so the cyclists will have to give it their all. The finish at Isola 2000, at over two thousand metres, has not happened for three decades.

The penultimate stage, which is relatively short (133 kilometres), with a route that goes from Nice to the Col de la Couillole, is marked by a demanding gradient of four kilometres and continuous ups and downs.
