The Queen’s Cup of Basketball Returns to Zaragoza in 2025 and 2027

The eight best teams in the Women’s League will compete for the title at the Príncipe Felipe, which in 2023 broke records by selling out its 10,800 seats

The Queen’s Cup of basketball will return to Zaragoza in 2025 and 2027. The Minister of Education, Culture and Sport, Tomasa Hernández, and the mayor of the Aragonese capital, Natalia Chueca, presented the agreement this Monday together with the president of the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), Elisa Aguilar, at an event that took place at Zaragoza City Hall.

The Director General of Sports of the Aragonese Executive, Cristina García, the Councillor for Sports, Félix Brocate, and the President of the Aragonese Basketball Federation (FAB), José Miguel Sierra, also attended.

The 2025 edition already has set dates: from Thursday, March 20 to Sunday, March 23. There will be four days of competition, in the usual format of quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

“The Queen’s Cup is one of the most influential events in Spanish women’s sport,” said Councillor Tomasa Hernández, congratulating the Spanish and Aragonese Federations for their work. “Making women’s basketball known by providing all the necessary resources has been essential to boosting them to the top,” she said.

The competition contributes to promoting the practice of basketball in Aragon and will also have a very important tourist and economic impact on the community. “Sport is becoming one of the economic drivers of the territories and this is how we understand it from the Government of Aragon, with a firm and determined commitment to sporting events.”

In this sense, the agreement is also part of the Zaragoza Government’s commitment to attracting sporting events of national and international scope. This is one of the strategic lines of the European Capital of Sport 2027 that the city of Zaragoza obtained.

PROMOTE VALUES

“We firmly believe in sport as a tool to promote very positive values for our society: effort, commitment, camaraderie, the ability to overcome… And also as a fundamental factor for economic growth,” explained the mayor.

“Hundreds of people will visit us for this Queen’s Cup. It is an opportunity to promote our city, our tourist, cultural and gastronomic attractions. And also to enhance our image abroad, to reinforce Zaragoza’s position on the national and international map, thanks to the media coverage of the event,” added the mayor.

Hernández has reaffirmed the commitment of the Aragonese Government to continue collaborating with the City Council “in promoting the city brand and the Aragon brand through sport.” Within the framework of the European Capital of Sport, “we will continue to support to put Zaragoza at the centre of the national and international sporting map,” he said, hoping that this new edition of the Queen’s Cup will be a success.

In 2023, the Príncipe Felipe Pavilion filled its capacity with 10,800 spectators, a record number in Spanish basketball. The Casademont women’s team is a true social phenomenon. On average, more than 5,000 people attend each game of the women’s team at the Príncipe Felipe. With this agreement, Casademont will thus have a guaranteed place as host in the 2025 and 2027 editions, together with the seven best ranked teams from the first round of the Women’s League.
