“The Tour de France is bigger than cycling”

“When you are not as strong as others, you need to use your head”

MADRID, 3 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

British cyclist Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan Team) thanked his team for their work and praised their assault on Eddy Merckx’s record with his 35th victory on Wednesday in the Tour de France, the history of this sport in its greatest showcase.

“Astana made a big bet on me for this Tour de France, so that I could come and win at least one stage. That shows how much my team knows what the Tour is all about. In this race, you have to go for it,” he said after crossing the finish line.

“We have done it. We have built a team for this; we have taken care of every detail thinking about this day. This is not going to put us at number one in the UCI rankings, but the Tour de France is bigger than cycling,” he added.

Cavendish also explained his start to the French race, in search of the record that everyone was expecting. “Normally I need a few days to get into the race. I have competed in 15 Tours. I don’t like having bad days or suffering, but I know that happens and that you carry everything in your head; that you have to look ahead and overcome difficulties,” he said.

“Even if you work hard and you end up with a good opportunity, things have to go in your favour. Today we didn’t nail our teamwork, but my teammates improvised to put me in the best possible position so that I could follow someone else’s wheel and win. When you’re not as strong as the others, as is my case, you have to use your head,” he concluded.
