The Ukrainian Yaroslava Mahutschich beat an ancient world record in athletics just a few weeks before the Olympics. The Kenyan Faith Kipyegon also set a new record. Malaika Mihambo celebrated her comeback in Paris.

High jump world champion Yaroslava Mahutschich has improved the almost 37-year-old world record. The 22-year-old from Ukraine cleared 2.10 meters at the Diamond League meeting in Paris. In doing so, she beat the mark set by Bulgarian Stefka Kostadinova, who cleared 2.09 meters on August 30, 1987 when she won the world title in the Olympic Stadium in Rome. Kenyan running star Faith Kipyegon then improved her own world record over 1500 meters to 3:49.04 minutes.

Three and a half weeks before the start of the Olympic athletics competitions, Mahutschich is the top favorite for gold. The newly crowned European champion clearly won in Paris ahead of Australian Nicole Olyslagers, who managed 2.01 meters in second place. Mahutschich’s previous best, who consistently delivers top performances despite the war in her home country, was 2.06 meters.

As announced, Mihambo did not complete all of the jumps, but only three attempts. “To stay within the limits of my body,” she told the TV station Sky before the competition. However, only the first attempt was valid. Nevertheless, she said afterwards: “I am very satisfied because I know that I had even better jumps up my sleeve. Unfortunately, they were invalid. Ultimately, it’s about staying within, and I managed to do that today.”
